On Friday night, the Parkdale Community Development Group is hosting SYNTHESIS – the annual gala fundraising event in support of the Queen West Art Crawl.

My Art Battle friends and I will be there, there will be a small Art Battle event going on, and I will be providing the music for the evening.  It will be a good time!

“Endgame” is a song I wrote on my DS while commuting in 2009.  I’ve included the original demo as well as the “real” version.

This is one of those songs that baffles me.  When I play it, people come up to me and tell me how much they like it. The look on my face is usually like “huh?” because this is one of those ones I sort of dismiss as being rather simple.  Another like that is one off my “come home” CD called “Getting Away”.  Many, many people call it their favourite, but it was one that I very heavily considered not including on the CD.

I guess the lesson to be learned here is…you guys are weird. ;)

A couple weeks ago, I decided it had been too long since I had sat down at my computer and proper synths (rather than DS) and wrote something.  I spent two afternoons writing, recording, editing, and mixing this song, and was sort of rushing to get it done for the Art Battle that took place last weekend.

Here’s the breakdown, if anyone is curious:

  • TR-707 drum samples
  • Nord Modular – bass
  • Steinberg Embracer – choir-like sound
  • ARP-2600v – plinky sequence
  • Nord Modular (using DX-7-like architecture) – bell sound
  • Nord Modular – muffled square arp
  • AnalogX Sayit – “insert” voice, run through autotune to control pitch

I played it at AB@V last weekend during the final battle.  It sounded alright, but I think I may continue to work on it.

Dirty Thirty

On January 7, 2011, in creation, memories, music, by holotape

I dinged 30 last month…not that happy about it :P

I took a long look back at my twenties and all of the things I did during them.  I saw all the different people who inspired me, and all of the crazy nord modular patches I’ve made.  I had a fairly popular band, kiss the messenger, and played on the majority of the city’s coolest stages.

My twenties were good.

Below is the last song of my twenties.  It should in no way be regarded as anything more than a chronological coincidence.  This does not some up a decade’s work or anything…in fact it was created on my Nintendo DS…it’s just a thing.

Nuit Blanche

On October 1, 2010, in memories, music, by holotape

Nuit Blanche again.  Not as excited about this year.  Last year was the first in a few that I had taken off (although I played a show the night before) and it wasn’t that great (the event, not my show!).  At least Zone C wasn’t that great.  I had a fun time with friends, we stopped in a few galleries, but the only thing in Trinity Bellwoods was a giant Lite-Brite.  Going to try some different zones this year.

I was thinking about our project two years ago…it started as a neat idea that Deejay Scootz and I loved, but the committee was divided and ultimately went a different way.  Below is a video I made, wrote, and scored that didn’t end up being used.  Maybe one day Scootz and I will create the Alternate Reality Game we imagined.

This is what happened at the actual event, with a performance by Kiss the Messenger as the highlight of the night…well, at least my night. :)
Some memorable moments of that show included Jaclyn stumbling onto her synth, letting out a dissonant saw-wave HONK emphasizing her clutziness, and the over-eager fog machines nearly choking us…forcing Jaclyn to take a short break while I did an awful, improvised stand-up routine.
Good times :)
