Art Battle at the Varley Recap

On February 9, 2011, in djing, music, by holotape

Wow.  We rocked the suburbs.  Nearly 500 people of all ages attended and we all had a fantastic time.

Things I learned:

  • High-school-aged volunteers can get you beer if you send them to the bar with a note
  • Bartenders love DJs
  • Old ladies can still wink
  • They have never heard of Justice in the suburbs, but they now love them
  • People are seemingly more enthusiastic about new art and new music in the suburbs
  • DJing from above the crowd will draw the eyes of everyone in the room
  • DJing from above the crowd puts you closer to the really hot lights
  • I love having a 720-watt subwoofer at my feet

I bought my first painting, and I’m quite excited about it.  It was painted by the very talented Morgan Booth, a friend and Art Battle team member.  It’s really incredible that this was painted in 20 minutes, while dancing:

Anyway, a big thank-you to the staff at the Varley and all of my Art Battle teammates.  Truly a great night.

Art Battle North

Art Battle at Varley Art Gallery

Art Battle goes north of the city to the Varley Art Gallery, a strong new face in the gallery world.  Their 2009 exhibition “The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal 1941-1960″ was recently named by Canadian Art as the best show of the year.  In the whole country.
Amazing!

This event also brings a couple Art Battle team members and myself back to our hometown, ready to impress and terrify the people we went to high school with who used to pick on us.

Just kidding, we buried them long ago ;)

Dash 8

On January 20, 2011, in creation, memories, music, by holotape

A few weeks ago I flew from Toronto Island Airport to Newark, NJ on a Bombardier Q400, also known as a Dash 8.

The plan was to go to NYC for New Year’s Eve.

For some reason Porter Airlines, whose pre- and in-flight experience is amazing, flies to Newark instead of Laguardia or JFK.  After landing in Jersey I was struck by one thing — the sound.

It’s as if Rockstar Games simply put a couple microphones in the street outside the airport to record the background ambience for all of their Grand Theft Auto games: the cars, the sirens, the obscenities in Jersey dialect in the distance.

We hopped on a commuter train to Penn Station.  For you Torontonians, think of a GO Train with twice as many seats in each car, and now imagine bringing a large suitcase and your puffy winter coat along with you.  Not so comfortable.

Anyway, the rest of the trip was incredible.  I loved my time in NYC and the weather was beautiful.  One afternoon I hopped on the L train to visit Williamsburg, Brooklyn to see what it was all about (hint: It’s Parkdale, but bigger).  Recommended places to visit at that time of year: anywhere but Times Square!

A few days before the trip, I wrote this somewhat obnoxious little song on my trusty DS-10 while visiting family for Xmas.
