Anything Can Fly

On November 22, 2011, in creation, music, by holotape

This weekend I participated in remixing a video.
I’d never done anything like this before, and I’ve only ever tried one remix (the Britney Spears one which can be found on my soundcloud page).
I made a rough version of the song after spending about 8 hours on Saturday staring at my monitors and sent it over to Alex Jones (among other things, cameraman and editor of Art Battle recap vids) to begin work on the editing. Everything was finalized on Sunday and uploaded late that night.

The results are pretty awesome:

I can’t wait to try something like this again!

At the Bottom vs. The Hypnoctopus

A recap video of AB12v13:

Art Battle 12 & 13 from Heads TO on Vimeo.

Alex did a great job editing this one. It truly excites me seeing cuts to my music.
The song in it is called At the Bottom, it was another that started as a DS-10 song.
At AB14, a dude came up to me while I was playing it and I told him he could download it on my site, but I guess I lied.

“Endgame” is a song I wrote on my DS while commuting in 2009.  I’ve included the original demo as well as the “real” version.

This is one of those songs that baffles me.  When I play it, people come up to me and tell me how much they like it. The look on my face is usually like “huh?” because this is one of those ones I sort of dismiss as being rather simple.  Another like that is one off my “come home” CD called “Getting Away”.  Many, many people call it their favourite, but it was one that I very heavily considered not including on the CD.

I guess the lesson to be learned here is…you guys are weird. ;)

A couple weeks ago, I decided it had been too long since I had sat down at my computer and proper synths (rather than DS) and wrote something.  I spent two afternoons writing, recording, editing, and mixing this song, and was sort of rushing to get it done for the Art Battle that took place last weekend.

Here’s the breakdown, if anyone is curious:

  • TR-707 drum samples
  • Nord Modular – bass
  • Steinberg Embracer – choir-like sound
  • ARP-2600v – plinky sequence
  • Nord Modular (using DX-7-like architecture) – bell sound
  • Nord Modular – muffled square arp
  • AnalogX Sayit – “insert” voice, run through autotune to control pitch

I played it at AB@V last weekend during the final battle.  It sounded alright, but I think I may continue to work on it.

No, this song is not about a laundry mishap.

It’s about perhaps too much to type into my little touch screen…I am posting this just as I am about to play it for the first time at Art Battle 8. If you couldn’t make it out tonight, here’s a piece of the action.
